Prelude to war Filippo Maria Visconti died leaving no suitable heir to the Duchy of Milan. Sigismund demanded the fief be returned to him as emperor against the last will of Visconti declaring Alfonso V of Aragon as duke; however, a Catholic populist revolt erupted at nearly the same time, demanding a rule by council.
